The Schenker Family

RECOGNIZING THE SCHENKER FAMILY

Leonard & Muriel Schenker met at a friend’s Sweet 16 party as teenagers and were married shortly thereafter in 1949.  Lenny was born and raised in Pennsylvania and Muriel from the Seagate Section of Brooklyn.

They moved to Florida where Muriel’s parents were living and Lenny went to work with his father-in-law, Jacob Jacobovitz, in the printing business in Wynwood area, almost 70 years ago.  Lenny worked in Pioneer Announcements, a 4th generation enterprise still family operated today.

Gregory was born in 1951 and Ellen in 1954.  The family joined Beth Torah in 1962 and lived down the block from Sabal Palm Elementary School where they attended. They went to JFK and Greg graduated in Class of 1969 from Norland High School.  Both children went through Religious School and USY and Greg became a Bar Mitzvah at Beth Torah.  Greg went on to UF where he received his BA and MA in Architecture and Urban Planning.

Greg and Laurie (Hochman) were introduced by friends for a blind date in 1977 and were married the following year at Beth Torah by Rabbi Lipschitz.  Laurie is a graduate of Boston University in Physics and Art History and an MA from University of Miami.  She taught art at Booker T Washington Senior High…a brave young woman.  Greg began his career in architecture with noted local firms until he opened SG2 Architects in Hollywood where he ran the business for the next 25 years.  After a career in art, Laurie worked at the family business.  Pioneer Announcements was growing and needed help.  Greg joined Laurie in operating the business.

Jill was born in 1982 and Jonathan in 1984.  They went through Beth Torah, Hillel and became a Bat & Bar Mitzvah at Beth Torah.  Laurie & Greg continued their membership at Beth Torah and Laurie served as Recording Secretary on the Board of Directors.  She was extremely dedicated.  Gave birth on Sunday, went right home so she could drive carpool on Tuesday and be at the Board Meeting that evening to take minutes. That’s loyalty!

Jonathan married his sweetheart from summer camp, Rebecca, who teaches at the 92nd Street Y in New York City.  They have two sons, Sam Lucas (4) and Jonah Zion (2 months).  Jill is now running the family business and is expecting a baby boy in July.

The Schenker Family continues to stay involved at Beth Torah.  Laurie and Greg are Co-Chairs of the 80th Anniversary Yearbook and part of the Committee to plan the 80th Anniversary Gala in May.  We are grateful to 4 generations of the Schenker Family and their 59 years as valued members of the Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus family.  Laurie and Greg will celebrate their 43rd wedding anniversary today, April 2.  Mazel Tov!
