The Saks Family

RECOGNIZING THE SAKS FAMILY

Barbara and Herbert “Bert” Saks met at the University of Florida when Barbara was a Freshman and Bert a Senior. Barbara grew up in Belle Harbor, NY and Bert in Paterson, NJ. They were just a few bridges away from each other in the early years of their lives.

Following their wedding at Temple Emanu-El, Miami Beach, with Rabbi Irving Lehrman officiating, January 31, 1954, Bert continued seeking his degree in law at the University of Miami Law School and the newlyweds lived in the UM Married Couples Dorm. He became an attorney in 1956 and retired from full-time practice of law about 35 years ago. They enjoyed traveling to “The City” and bought an apartment in New York. They played tennis as often as possible and looked after their investments.

Barbara and Bert moved to North Miami and lived in Breezeswept when they joined Beth Torah in 1963 with their three children Elyn, Warren & Kevin, ages 10, 8 and 5.  All three went to Beth Torah Harold Wolk Religious School and became a Bar & Bat Mitzvah. They later moved to their home on Keystone Point.

Their children were special in their lives. Their daughter, Elyn, graduated first in her class of 5,000 students at Vanderbilt University, received an M.A. from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar and continued at Yale Law School. She is a distinguished professor of law at USC School of Law and is characterized by Bert as being “All- World.”  Their son, Warren, was a guru in the stock market and son, Kevin, a graduate of Washington University in Civil Engineering. They are both retired. Barbara & Bert have three grandchildren, one at Oxford University, one in Houston and one local. They are equally proud of all of them.

Even after moving to Broward twenty years ago, Barbara & Bert remained loyal members of
Beth Torah. They remember their dear friends over the years, and…. THEY LOVED RABBI MAX! They were quiet philanthropic members of the South Florida community.

Three years ago, they gave up traveling and other activities. Barbara and Bert are still together
all the time and continue to enjoy each other’s affection. As Bert said, we have always been side
by side all these many years and according to the joke heard before “we’ve been married 67 years; the first 65 were the hardest”.

We wish Barbara & Bert Saks a Mazel Tov on their 67th Wedding Anniversary this Sunday and recognize their commitment to Beth Torah for the past 57 years as a Generational Family during our 80th Anniversary Celebration.

Each week one of our generational families will be recognized by our congregation blessed
by the rabbis at both the “virtual” Friday evening and Shabbat morning services.
Over 50 families have been identified with 50 + years of membership at Beth Torah and another
25 families as their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who are currently members of Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus.
