FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21 AT 7:00PM & SATURDAY OCTOBER 22 AT 9:30 AM
Supported by Sisterhood and the Social Action Committee, this year Pink Shabbat will be observed at Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus on Friday, October 21st, and Saturday, October 22nd. Featured will be guest speakers including oncologist Brian Hunis, a special “pink” oneg and kiddish, and the opportunity to connect with experts in the field. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink.
Pink Shabbat is observed annually by hundreds of synagogues and other organizations to increase awareness about breast cancer and the increased risk among Jewish women.
Pink Shabbat is the brainchild of Sharsheret, a nonprofit organization with the goal of supporting Jewish women diagnosed with breast cancer and now also ovarian cancer.
Sharsheret works primarily with Jewish women and their families because Ashkenazi Jews are at approximately ten times higher risk of breast cancer than the general population due to a BRCA gene mutation.
Sharsheret provides individual support, healthcare resources, financial assistance, communal support, and educational programs throughout the United States. The organization pairs women diagnosed with cancer with others of similar backgrounds and life experience as a way to tailor support for each individual. Support is not just about the disease, but about someone’s life with cancer.
